Half Globe Work Table

Berlin, around 1800

mahogany, maple, ash, iron lock, marbled paper (porphyry), brass

Height: 74 cm (28.7 inch)
Diameter: 53 cm (20.9 inch) Ref No: 3493

The three curved legs with boch feet end in fully carved ram’s heads and support the hemispherical body lined with porphyry-stained paper; the hemisphere is carved from a single block of ash burl. Hinged tabletop with maple veneer on the underside and mahogany veneer on the top. Very nice authentic condition.

This table is typical of a small group of Berlin furniture that probably all came from the same workshop. Two other half-globus tables are known, as well as several etageres, torchères, and side tables, all of which have nearly identical, fully carved ram heads. The design of the tripod as a table base is inspired by contemporary antique finds and is reminiscent of furniture designs by Friedrich David Gilly (1772-1800) or Martin Friedrich Rabe (1775-1856).
